Military service can offer a meaningful career path for people who completed some or all of their education outside the United States. Whether you are interested in enlisting, applying for officer candidacy, or pursuing a specialized military role, you may need to show how your international education compares with U.S. academic standards.

A credential evaluation can help military recruiters and other reviewing authorities understand diplomas, degrees, transcripts, and other academic records issued in another country. Requirements can vary by service branch, position, and application pathway, so it is important to confirm what is needed before beginning the evaluation process. ECE helps applicants present their international education clearly and accurately through professional credential evaluation reports.

Understanding the Educational Requirements for Military Service

Educational requirements differ depending on the military path you plan to pursue.

Enlistment generally requires proof of secondary-level education. Officer candidacy usually requires a qualifying four-year degree or another specified level of postsecondary education. Some military occupations, professional programs, and specialized roles may have additional academic requirements.

International credentials may not use the same terminology or follow the same educational structure as credentials issued in the United States. Program lengths, grading systems, graduation requirements, and credential names can vary considerably from one country to another.

A credential evaluation reviews your academic records and provides information about how your education compares with the U.S. education system. This can help a recruiter or military reviewing office understand the level of education you completed and the type of credential you earned.

The appropriate military authority makes the final decision about whether your education meets its requirements. An evaluation does not guarantee enlistment, admission to an officer program, placement in a particular occupation, rank, or any other military outcome.

Why the Type of Evaluation Matters

Credential evaluation reports provide different levels of academic detail. The report you need may depend on the service branch, position, officer program, or reviewing office handling your application.

A General report identifies the academic credentials you earned and provides their U.S. educational equivalencies. It does not include a detailed review of individual courses, grades, or credits.

A Course by Course report includes more detailed academic information, such as subjects studied, credits earned, grades received, and a grade point average for each evaluated credential.

Before placing an order, ask your recruiter or military contact which report type is required. You should also confirm whether the report must include secondary education, university-level study, or both.

Delivery requirements may vary as well. Ask whether ECE must send the report directly to the recruiter, military processing office, or another designated recipient. Military recipients can receive reports through our Dispatch delivery system. Confirming these details in advance can help you order the correct report and avoid unnecessary delays

Preparing International Credentials for Evaluation

Once you know which report to order, review the ECE® Documentation Requirements for the country where you completed your education.
Documentation requirements vary by country, institution, credential level, and type of academic record. Depending on your educational background, you may need to provide:

• Diplomas or degree certificates
• Academic transcripts
• Mark sheets or grade reports
• Proof of graduation
• Records sent directly by the issuing institution
• Documents submitted through an approved electronic service

Follow the country-specific instructions carefully. Some records may need to come directly from your school, university, examining body, or another approved source. Documents submitted in the wrong format or through an unapproved method may not meet the evaluation requirements.

Lastly, begin gathering your records early. Requesting documents from an institution outside the United States can take time, especially when the institution requires identity verification, processing fees, written requests, or international delivery.

Using the Evaluation During the Application Process

After the evaluation is complete, follow your recruiter’s instructions for submitting the report. Depending on the branch and application pathway, the report may need to be sent to a recruiter, military processing office, officer program, or another designated recipient.

Be prepared to provide additional academic records if the reviewing authority requests them. Keep your ECE® account and order information accessible so you can check delivery details or request an additional report copy when needed.

A credential evaluation addresses your academic background. Applicants must still meet all other military eligibility requirements that apply to their intended pathway. These may include age, citizenship or residency status, medical qualifications, physical fitness standards, aptitude testing, background requirements, and security clearance eligibility.

The military reviewing authority determines whether the evaluation and supporting records satisfy its requirements.
